Burst Pipe Emergency: What to Do in the First 10 Minutes

A burst pipe is one of the most urgent water damage emergencies because of how quickly it can flood a space. Acting fast in the first 10 minutes can significantly limit the damage.

Minute 1-2: Shut Off the Water. Locate your main water shutoff valve — usually near where the water line enters your home, in a basement, utility closet, or near the water meter — and turn it off immediately.

Minute 3-4: Shut Off Electricity If Necessary. If water is near any outlets, switches, or the electrical panel, and you can safely reach your breaker panel without stepping through water, shut off power to the affected area.

Minute 5-6: Assess and Document. Take a moment to assess how much water has accumulated and photograph the damage for insurance purposes.

Minute 7-8: Begin Moving Valuables. If it's safe, move furniture, electronics, and valuables out of the affected area.

Minute 9-10: Call for Professional Help. Call a restoration professional immediately. The faster water extraction and drying begins, the better the outcome for your property.

Common Causes of Burst Pipes: Winter freezing is one of the leading causes, as water expands when it freezes and can crack pipes from the inside. Aging or corroded plumbing, high water pressure, and poor pipe installation are other common culprits.

Prevention Tip: In cold climates, insulating exposed pipes and allowing faucets to drip slightly during extreme cold can help reduce freeze risk, though this doesn't eliminate it entirely.
